Global professional services firm Deloitte has strengthened its consulting practice in India with the appointment of Anand Shankar as Partner and Leader of its HR Transformation practice. The University of Chicago alumnus brings with him over two decades of rich experience as a consultant.

Deloitte has been aggressively expanding its consulting arm in India over the past year. The recent launch of Deloitte Digital in India was a significant milestone in this growth journey, which also included acquiring more than 20 partners and their teams — totaling over 350 professionals — from fellow Big Four firm KPMG.

With the ambition of building the largest consulting practice in the country, Deloitte has now added Anand Shankar, a seasoned professional in the consulting industry. Shankar specializes in HR strategy and has spent more than 20 years helping organizations align their business goals with people objectives.

Shankar’s career journey is quite inspiring. He began in hotel management before transitioning into human resources consulting. He holds an advanced Mastership in Hotel Management from the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition in Chennai.

He spent the first seven years of his career with the Taj Group of Hotels — India’s second-largest hotel chain — where he rose to the position of Food & Beverage Manager. His first move outside the hospitality sector was into retail, where he served as Manager for Retail Store Operations at Littlewoods.

In the consulting domain, Shankar had two long stints at Aon, interrupted by a two-year role as Group Director for Corporate Development at Talent2 International. During his first tenure at Aon (under Hewitt Associates), he worked for over a decade as Regional Manager for Client Development in the Asia Pacific region.

In his second spell at Aon, he started as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) for Asia Pacific and eventually rose to the position of Global CCO. During his eight years with the firm, he also served as CEO for India and Practice Leader for the consulting segment. He is also a graduate of the Aon Pinnacle Executive Development Program from the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago.

Until recently, Shankar was working as an independent contractor. He has now joined Deloitte as a Partner and will lead the firm’s HR Transformation practice. He will be relocating from Singapore (where he was based with Aon) to Bengaluru, and will report to Gaurav Lahiri, Partner and Human Capital Leader.
