Vishwesh Padmanabhan, Partner and Head of Digital Consulting at KPMG India, has shared valuable insights on the evolving role of HR in the digital era. In an interview with People Matters, he highlighted that automating routine tasks has become a top priority for most organizations today.

KPMG has consistently emphasized the critical importance of HR in driving organizational success. Across the globe, businesses are increasingly recognizing that the biggest challenges during periods of growth and transformation often arise from the people side — reinforcing the fact that employees remain at the heart of every successful organization.

In a recent report, KPMG stressed that HR policies must be reshaped to adapt to the fast-changing business landscape, especially as employee expectations continue to evolve. Analysis shows that within the next five years, employees will increasingly need to collaborate with various technologies to deliver maximum value.

Securing the right skills and talent will be essential in this new environment. This can be achieved through strategic recruitment combined with effective learning and development programs — both of which are core responsibilities of HR.

Speaking to People Matters, Padmanabhan outlined the key areas where HR policies are evolving:

“The first major focus area for HR is digital labour — the augmentation and automation of human work. This is rapidly being integrated into HR processes such as recruitment, onboarding, and performance management, as well as day-to-day business operations. Many companies are currently using co-bots (collaborative robots that work alongside humans), and HR teams are playing a key role in training employees to effectively collaborate with these technologies.

The second important focus is managing the influx of digital-native talent entering the workforce and building the right organizational mindset to fully leverage their capabilities,” he explained.

While acknowledging concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) potentially leading to job losses, Padmanabhan noted that the negative effects of AI on employment are expected to be temporary.

“History has shown us that every major technological shift brings an initial period of adjustment. However, over time, technology creates new jobs and roles that are often difficult to imagine at the beginning of the journey,” he added.

Padmanabhan also shared that KPMG is actively strengthening its own HR capabilities. The firm is investing in internal talent development while supporting several clients through HR transformation programs as they navigate their digital journeys.
